Philippine Folk Dance-Sapatya of Pampanga

SAPATYA (Dance Steps)
(Pampango )
Sapatya is a favorite folk dance of the PampangueƱos. The dance is usually presented by the farmers during the planting season as an offering for a good harvest.
According to the old people, the word Sapatya must have been derived from the word Zapateado, a Spanish dance introduced in the Philippines by the early Spanish settlers. The version described here is from barrio Manibaug, Porac, Pampanga. The Sapatya folk dance is usually accompanied by a song, the words of which are improvised or taken from the "corridos. "
COSTUME: Girl wears a siesgo skirt, kimona, tapis, and soft panuelo over one shoulder. Boy wears barong tagalog or camisa de chino and trousers of any color.
MUSIC is composed of two parts: A and B.
COUNT one, two thre; to a measure in 3/4 time; one, and, two in 2/4 time.
FORMATION:  Partners face each other about four feet apart. When facing audience, Girl stands at Boy's right.
The dance is composed of two parts: the first part, PULOSA, in 3/4 time and the second part, KORTADA, in 2/4 time.

Partners face each other.
(a) Step R sideward (ct. 1), step L across the R in front (ct. 2), step R in rear (et. 3). R arm in reverse "T" position with forearm turn, L arm bent forward at chest level with kumintang. ………….1 M
(b) Repeat (a), starting L foot. Reverse position of arms. ……………….1 M
(c) Repeat (a), and (b), two more times. At the end of the sixth measure partners are farther apart. ............4 M
(d) Starting with R foot, take two waltz steps forward to return to original places. R forearm turn finishing with arm forward, palm up, chest level; L arm bent forward at chest level (1 M). Reverse position of arms (1 M). …………….. 2 M
(e) Repeat all (a-d). Finish about four feet away from each other………………... 8 M

(a) Take one big waltz step obliquely R forward to finish by L shoulders at center. R arm forward at chest level, palm up, L hand of Girl holding skirt, L hand of Boy is placed on waist……………1 M
(b) Turn right about and take one big waltz step obliquely L backward to partner's place. Girl holds skirt, Boy places hands on waist……………….. 1 M
(c) Repeat (a) and (b), finishing in proper places. ……………2 M
(d) Repeat (a-c). Execute a close step on the eighth measure instead of waltz step. ……………4 M
(e) Repeat all (a-d), starting with L foot, passing by R shoulders. Reverse position of arms in (a) and reverse turn in (b)……………….8 M

(a) Step R sideward (ct. 1), step L across R in rear (ct. 2), step R sideward (ct. 3), point L in front (cts. 1, t 3). Girl holds skirt and when pointing with L foot, raises skirt a little bit at left side. Boy, R arm in reverse "T" position with forearm turn, L arm bent forward at chest level with kumintang………….2 M
(b) Repeat (a), starting L foot. Boy, reverse position ' of arms. Girl raises skirt at right side……..2 M
(c) Starting with R foot, take four waltz steps forward to partner's place, passing by R shoulders. Girl holds skirt with R hand, L hand on waist; Boy, R arm in reverse "T" position with kumintang, L hand on waist (1 M). Boy and Girl reverse position of hands at every measure………………. 4 M
(d) Repeat all (a-c). Finish in proper places……………..8 M

(a) Step R sideward (ct. 1), point L across R foot ' in rear and twist body slightly to left (cts. 2, 3). R arm in reverse "T" position with forearm turn, L arm bent forward at chest level with kumintang. Look at partner………………1 M
(b) Repeat (a), starting with L foot. Reverse position of arms and direction……………..1 M
(c) Starting with R foot across L in front, take two cross waltz steps obliquely forward right. Finish near each other at center in back-to-back position by turning right, Girl facing audience and Boy facing away from audience. Hands as in (a) and (b)…………..2M
(d) Repeat (a) and (b). Look at each other over L and R shoulders when in back-to-back position. …………… 2 M
(e) Face left (partner's place). Repeat (c), moving obliquely left forward to partner's place, finish facing each other. …………….2 M

Front first. Hands as in (a) and (b)………………2 M
(d) Starting with R foot, take four change steps forward moving half-way around clockwise, finishing in partner's place. Hands as in (a), R and L alternately……………4 M

Partners face each other. Girl and Boy doing their movements simultaneously.
Girl
(a) Put weight on L foot. Stamp R foot three times and at the same time clap hands three times on cts. 1, and, 2 of every measure………………..4 M
(b) Take four cross-change steps sideward, R and L across in front alternately. Twist body to left and right alternately. Bend both knees on ct. 2 of every measure. Fists loosely closed, roll hands over each other in front of chest (R over L hand (ct. 1), L over R hand (ct. and), swing R forearm to right side (et. 2). Reverse position of hands every measure…………….4 M
(c) Repeat (a )……………4 M
(d) Take two cross-change steps, R and L across in front. Hands as in (b)……………….. 2 M
(e) Execute a three-step turn right in place, hands down at sides (1 M). Feet together and bow to partner or audience, open hands in second position (1 M )………………..2 M
